I really don't want this to become another "one vs the other" thread though. It's just that I use Spotlight on the Mac to launch everything I do. My dock has almost nothing in it, just Finder and some Stacks... It's much faster for me to hit cmd+space and then type Fi + enter for FireFox, then to point and click on an icon for it. I'd really like to be able to do the same for the Start Menu search in Windows, but I'm having trouble trusting the search results enough to use it with enough speed to make it an advantage.
You sound like a good candidate for Quicksilver on the Mac, based on your personal workflow for launching apps. Have you looked at Quicksilver at all? I have no experience with it, but it sounds right up your alley
