Some people enlighten. Some people do the exact opposite. Some people promote reason, debate, intelligent discussion, give and take, alternate viewpoints. Some people scream and talk over their counterparts. Some people use arguments. Some people use pure rhetoric, slogans, branding, us vs them mentality. Some people try and change the definition of words to slander another's position.

Radio/talk show people influence people. They can influence them in many different ways. Whether you consider their influence damaging depends on your perspective.

I don't know too much about this Glenn Beck character but listening to half that youtube video posted in this thread makes me never want to listen to him again and worry about those that see him as a guiding figure, a voice of reason, etc.

So should we censor him then?

A thought on censorship.
The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859 |
