I believe IFF pointed out a while back than even the middle class in the US pays more taxes than the middle class in Canada.
To me, taxes, even as complex as the system usually is, the result should still be quite simple. Everyone pays roughly the same percentage of taxes, period. No cheating the system, no being able to hire a team of accountants for a million bucks so you can get around paying as much as you should.
The Social Security plan is the same way. Once you start making more than a certain amount, which I believe is either $150,000, or $250,000, the percentage that you have to pay in, which I believe is 7% in the US, goes down. Just mind-boggling why.
Stuff like that needs to be fixed, but you are right that the majority of the people don't understand it, therefore they'll just scream socialism, communism or whatever else because the US loves it rhetoric these days.

Uuhh yeah it is screwed up.
It is pretty sad when the secretary of a CEO pays a higher percentage of their income in taxes than the CEO due to tax breaks/shelters and such.
