I dont mean to be stereotypical, but I wonder if they did this in Canada if we would see similar results (obviously all countries have uneducated people) but is Canadas over-all education system better than in the states?

National Geographic did a test on this a few years ago. Of the nine industrialized countries that participated, only Mexica fared worse than the US in knowledge of geography and world events. To be fair, Canada did better than the US, but not by much.

Among young Americans’ startling knowledge gaps, the study found that
• nearly 30 percent of those surveyed could not find the Pacific Ocean, the world’s largest body of water;
• more than half—56 percent—were unable to locate India, home to 17 percent of people on Earth; and
• only 19 percent could name four countries that officially acknowledge having nuclear weapons.

Nearly one American in three can't identify the Pacific Ocean?!
[Edit]
Looking at the individual questions is particularly glaring; on the "What is the current population of the United States?" question, every other nation scored better than the US. Crazy.
