The Mosque issue is a no brainer. I'm not suprised Obama found himself on the other side of the issue. He is an idiot. The City of New York has the right to refuse any building permit it wants based on whatever they want the landscape to look like in their city. Usually it takes a lot of time and effort to get permission to build anything of this size. To have it pass quickly with all in favour is unheard of. These people don't even own all the property yet or have shown they have the capital to get the job done.
Building a Mosque two blocks away from ground zero is of no benefit to New Yorkers. For one Islamic terrorists will see it as a monument to their victory. Traditionally Muslim invaders errect a Mosque on conquerd soil. That is why there is a Mosque on the Temple mount in Jerusalem. So even if it is build as a place of peace it will be seen in the radical Muslim world as a memorial to a victory. Also, them wanting to call it "Ground Zero Mosque" causes me to seriously doubt the motives of those who want to build it .
New Yorkers lost friends and family to a small group of people who acted in the name of "Allah". Since then the've had to endure threats real and imagined by others all acting in the name of "Allah". New Yorkers have suffered this with little retalitation against others of this religious faith. I don't think people not wanting a Mosque and educational school devoted to this god built in the shadow of ground zero is being intolerant. I believe the people behind this effort are the ones being insensitive.
To illustrate the double standard imployed; this same City planning committee have refused to issue a permit to the Greek Orthadox church to rebuild the church on their own land that was destroyed on 9/11.
