Scheduling will be a nightmare for them though as they don't provide opponents with the exposure or the pay day that Notre Dame does. There's also less quality opponents who will want to play them with the pac-10 and big-10 both expanding to 12 teams with 9 conference games.
I've also heard rumours that they're pushing for an automatic BCS bid ala Notre Dame. This would be absolutely stupid and if it goes through SMU might as well go independent and become "Notre Dame South"
BYU best chance at becoming a top tier program would be to stay in the MWC and hope that they along with TCU and the newly acquired Boise State continue to rip it up.
