I believe that in South Africa it has become completely illegal to sell abalone, whether in market or restaurant. That's how threatened they've become. Yet, still it is surprising that I would hear more about that when I was there than large game poaching, although I was in Cape Town which outside of the range of most large game found nearer to Jo'burg such as rhinos and elephants.
