It's been three years since I switched from the BB, but back then we didn't need to wait for carrier updates. We (or at least I) just downloaded the new versions straight from RIM. Unless things have changed, you might still be able to:

Also, on a completely separate note... There's now an "express" version of BES. Definitely worth checking out. Blackberries always seemed kinda pointless to me in the past without a BES sync, although (admittedly) I have no clue if they've done anything decent with their desktop sync. All I know is free BES is a good thing. Especially for SMBs.
