Yeah, I would go so far as to say that just by macroing better than the other guy you can win in bronze-low diamond. Doesn't matter if he has the counter, you'll just have more stuff. (wow I sound like Day9)
Try to only have 1 unit in your queue because anything else is wasted resources until it actually starts building. If you have too many minerals throw down another production facility or build an expo. As protoss it's really easy to keep your minerals relatively even as well. Too many minerals? Spam Zealots. Too much gas? Spam sentries. Expoing soon? Spam sentries to build up your minerals.

Edit: Anyone know how to make good use of warp gates? I always see the pros using warpgates instead of gateways, but I can't get a hang of it. With gateways I can set up queues for building units, do something else, then come back and have an army. With warp gates, it's like you have to pay constant attention to them, but nice if you can warp prism them in as necessary

W is the hotkey for warpgates, that makes things a bit easier. Back in beta when I was still figuring things out I was like "WTF Warpgates are so much harder!" but warpgate shaves 10ish seconds off per unit, and you get the unit right away so you have a bit of leeway. It really is a MUST have. Plus it prevents you from getting in the habit of having 2983479287 zealots queued up wasting resources.
I also find warpgate easier (now that I'm used to it) than queueing from a Barracks because you can add your unit to the control group right away.
Just start using it and eventually it will become a habit to just press W every few seconds to check if your warpgate cooldown is up. Just like spamming larva as a zerg.
