Russic is bang on here. Facebook is a billion times less annoying if you block the stuff you hate!

Ahhh... well-timed question, Azure. Though I'm sure there are dozens of websites with step-by-step guides for this, I'll start off with the basics.

#1. If a post appears on your news feed that you hate, hover over said post, and click on the "X" icon that appears on the right-hand side. This will bring up a dialog box with a few options (depending on the type of content). If, like me, you never want to see another update about Treasure Island or Fish World or Mafia Wars again in your life, you would choose the option "Hide *fill in the blank*" and that particular application would be permanently hidden from your news feed. You may also choose to hide a particular poster permanently, rather than the content of the poster.

2.) In your notification area, when something pops up from an app or group you dislike (and it happens repeatedly), then click on the small print link below it, "Block This Application" to never see another notification from that app. You can also ignore all notifications from a person.

3.) All of this stuff can also be internally controlled within your Account's "Privacy Settings". Try going to "Account" > "Privacy Settings" > BLOCK LISTS "Edit Your Lists". At the bottom of this page, it lists all the apps you have blocked. I'm up to 24 now. (Hallelujah!) Above the list, you may block people/apps/events all in one place.

There are other privacy and application settings tweaks that may improve your experience, but following these steps will certainly get you going in the right direction.

Facebook needs reeling in.
