It doesn't run iPhone apps, it would have to be running the iPhone's OS to do that (or have a emulation layer).
The Galaxy S's screen is 800 x 480, and the 3GS's is 480 x 320 so yeah it's better than that. The iPhone 4's is 960 x 640 (and is half an inch smaller, so things look even sharper), but the Galaxy S uses a different technology that is pretty impressive from what I've read (180 degree viewing angle).
