Well I agree the list given is quite fashionable and it's very easy to like The Arcade Fire nowadays, I believe you are underestimating their potential. People like Bowie, Bono and Chris Martin are raving over this band and it's not because it seems like it's a cool thing to do.
Here's the lead story from a leading UK music puplication

It may not be Mainstream music but it's close enough that they've been able to gain Major Canadian radio success on 2 singles from Funeral. That's more than what many Canadian "Mainstream" bands can say.

There have been literally hundreds of indie bands over the years that have been raved about at one time or another. That still doesnt make them mainstream...OR successful. It just means that "some" people in the media like them.
I loved Bowies mainstream stuff....but he has put out a lot of crap too.
As to MarchHares comments...I was a musician too...my son is a musician...so is Walter Ostaniuk and Anne Murray and many others. Id bet the majority would disagree on the formulaic style of the bands you listed. You chose those bands because thats the style you like pure and simple. As to the Big Mac vs the Five course meal thang...maybe its more like a Thai meal choice vs an Italian?
