I think for me it's a question of timing.
In 1990 I was 14, and probably didn't quite realise the significance of the game at the time - it was only the second World Cup that I had ever watched.
By the time 1996 came around, I was 20, and at university in London, so everything was happening on my doorstep and we were watching all the games in the Student Union bar. The atmosphere in the capital that summer was amazing (maybe it's just rose-tinted spectacles?).
It had also come on the back of the 4-1 drubbing of the Netherlands, and I think that the expectation levels were that little bit higher. That always makes defeat harder to handle.
