Indie Rock : Sufjan Stevens : Illinois
Light Rock : Anberlin : Cities
Hard Rock : Switchfoot : Hello Hurricane
Heavy Rock : Red : Innocence & instinct
Thrash Rock : Emery : In shallow seas we sail
All the above are anything but lame and are very lyrically challenging. Most of it happens behind the curtains and just because they aren't mainstream doesn't mean it is crap. Eminem plays to his audience/white rapper/underdog/tough life/disfunctional/women.../f-you/angry narcissist....the message/lyrics are crap/corny and he is the biggest sell out of all time. It will never change even if he is recovering...

First part of your post..I am dismissive of organized religion so I probably am dismissive of christian rock.
Second part of your post..totally agree. The Eminem single comes on the radio after Katy Perry's California song and people think its edgy and passionate. That "Not Afraid" song is completely contrived and so is the sweeping sentiment that this is Eminem's big revival. Its the marketing machine at its best. Eminem is pretty much as mainstream and corporate as it gets now. That's not to dismiss everything he does, but lets not delude ourselves into thinking that he's making some really edgy, gutsy music. Seriously, that song reminds me of an afterschool special or something like that. Overproduced garbage.
