My son has one kidney. His other cystic kidney was removed when he was three years old. Two kidneys were very necessary in his case. He will lead a normal life with the remaining kidney, thank goodness.
This is actually fairly common. Many adults today are walking around with only one functional kidney, unaware of the situation. This is detected now by ultrasounds, but was not really screened for before.
