Default Parking Ticket in Los Angeles

So I was in Los Angeles and my parking meter ran out of time about 10 minutes before I returned to my car and I had a parking ticket sitting on my windshield. The car was a rental car and from what I've been able to research I will get charged through the rental agency once they learn that the car was ticketed.

My questions are, should I just wait for my rental car company to bill me or should I pay the fine first? If I pay the fine is there a chance I will also be billed by the rental company? What are the consequences of me not paying the ticket at all (does a parking ticket go any higher than the original jurisdiction it was issued in i.e. city of Los Angeles, could I potentially only get in trouble if I'm back in L.A. or could this come back to bite me whenever I'm in the US). Any advice would be great!
