I volunteered as a dog walker / play buddy at the Vancouver SPCA about 10 years ago. Did it for about 6 months when I briefly lived there, and it was incredibly rewarding. I'll be honest, I originally got involved because I wanted to impress a gal I met out there I was chasing who was also a volunteer, but in the end, I could care less about her, and I grew incredibly attached to some of the dogs.

However it was incredibly difficult at the same time knowing you couldn't play with or walk very dog in the building. They would get so pumped up when you got there, and walked past all their cages, because they knew who you were, and that you were a ticket to that awesome outside place. I used to feel so guilty I couldn't take every one of them. I always had the soft spot for the older dogs, as I knew they were less likely to get adopted, and they would transform almost into puppies when they were given some attention.

Also if you are looking for a chick magnet volunteering gig, it is definitely near the top of the list. But you'll quickly find that your number one priority is giving the animals every ounce of attention you can, as they are usually so pumped to be around you.
