to be really honest, there was a greater fear of the Japanese because of their threat to the Pacific, their fanaticism and single minded loyalty to the Emperor, and absolutely racism against the Japanese people.

Its funny because during WWII or at least the first half, there was a lot of military to military respect for the German Military. The Italian's were seen as an absolute joke especially after their military adventures in Ethiopia.

The Japanese were a different animal. They were incredibly brutal, ruthless, and cruel. The attack on pearl harbor was considered to be an absolute stab in the back, but it also illustrated that Japan had the capability to strike at the West Coast. Neither the German's nor Italians did that.

While it was felt that eventually the German's would be able to be negotiated with, and the German's losing the war was seen as somewhat inevitable. The same wasn't felt about the Japanese.
