I agree about Wallace, but I think stats are only irrelevant in small sample sizes. Especially in baseball, a sport that has insane amounts of sabermetrics. So while average is a completely useless and outdated stat, there are other measures that are not.
So I look at it like this. To judge a player's potential and projection or their defensive ability, you can use the human eye. But stats are a way to justify offensive output.
