Aren't the US and Canada huge trading partners as well? If your biggest importer/exporter is under attack, its going to affect your economy.

The two countries are two closely linked and have too many border issues for the US to be able to look the other way if Canada were attacked.

Would the US rather Canada had a much more substantial military to defend the north? Of course. But its a huge threat to America if anybody attacks/invades Canada.
Water and oil.

The US does not want either to be under enemy control. Nevermind that the only time the US has been attacked on their continent was by Canada, there is no way they would stand by and watch an attack on Canada without getting involved.
