I've never quite understood it. Your iPhone 3G/3GS was the greatest thing since sliced bread 3 months ago...

I'm on board with you if you have a 3GS (I personally don't think an upgrade from there is worth the hassle or $$), but if you're coming from a 3G the difference is quite substantial and not minor in any way. Apple has been pushing the operating system and every time they do it, the 3g falls further and further behind. In many cases it gets mind-bogglingly slow. A 3G from 3 months ago is not that great.
Just off the top of my head, from a 3G to a 4 you're getting a compass for better gps, an hd video recorder, an incredible camera, a gyro, massive screen upgrade, forward facing camera, iPad speed and a massive slash in thickness. If the USA sales numbers are any indication iPhone 4's could be a big pain in the ass to get for a while. People who line up may actually save themselves some running around in the long run (or it might just end up being a good way to skip work ... either way it's a win).
