I don’t fully understand, and someone else here does for sure because they clued me into it - but as I understand it, McDonalds owns all the buildings, and franchisee’s must lease the space from McDonalds. That and their toy sales are what keep them in operation.
I also think, but I’m not certain, that the franchisee’s buy their McDonalds ingredients direct from suppliers, and not from the parent company, which further reinforces the notion that its all about real estate and toys.
