It never bothered me that the PS3 only came with A/V cables. I get that a lot of people still don't have HD TVs. I had a component cable which I'd bought for my PS2, but even the difference between that and the HDMI cable, made the $20 for the HDMI one worth it.
IIRC, Xbox 360 has 512MB shared ram and the PS3 has 256MB system and 256MB video memory. In my opinion, they stretch these limited resources like you can't imagine. Developers really work hard to squeeze in what they can with very lean and optimized code and resources. The way the two systems address memory and processors is very different too, and that leads to why many companies develop for Xbox first and then port to PS3 and many lazy developers usually do a bad job since it's a very different architecture. Ghostbusters is the most extreme case of this that I've seen where the PS3 actually runs at a lower resolution than the Xbox and has many shader effects missing and inferior textures.

I don't understand why these companies do not include HD cables, unless they are in collusion with the video cable or big box retail companies which want to profit off unknowing consumers. As I said previously, I bought component and HDMI cables for PS3 off ebay for less than $4 shipped so it's not a matter of cost. In bulk, it would probably cost Microsoft/Sony less than a dollar per cable to add one to the box. Do Microsoft or Sony sell "official" HD cables? I don't recall seeing these but I don't pay much attention in the console isles.
