I work in securities and trust me people buy shares in companies all the time thinking that they are getting an amazing deal only to find out the shares are worthless 6 months later. It's not a scam though, it's people not knowing enough about what their buying plain and simple.

What is the difference between getting nothing in return for your $2000 or if you get something worth $400 for $2400. You are still being screwed out of $2000 because you are making a bad decision.
If they didn't go through the efforts of making the value of the product appear to be far higher than it actually was, I would totally agree with you. Most of these scams involve fake price tags, brochures and sometimes even websites. The same way a "Nigerian Price" tries to convince you to 'purchase' something that isn't worth as much as they are claiming it is.
