It was at a gas station. It's a scam. You know it, I know it. If you tried to sell your $300,000 home for 5 million at the local Petro Canada then yes its a scam. I wouldn't fall for someone palming off a "6900" dollar TV for 800 bucks and neither would you but obviously some people do. A scam is a scam. Yes it was his fault for falling for it and hopefully he has learned his lesson.
The difference again though is that you are just taking the $2000 with nothing in return. The guy might overpay for the speakers or whatever, but he is getting what he decided to pay for. Do I think it's a good idea? No, I think it's a bad decision, but that doesn't mean it's a scam either. I work in securities and trust me people buy shares in companies all the time thinking that they are getting an amazing deal only to find out the shares are worthless 6 months later. It's not a scam though, it's people not knowing enough about what their buying plain and simple.
