To me this isn't a scam, just poor judgment. If I try to sell you my house for $5 million and you decide to buy it there is no scam either. Just don't buy the house if you don't think it's worth it. People overpay for things all the time.

A difference only in scale. The buyer got something near worthless. The seller knew that the TV was not worth anywhere near 800 bucks let alone the 6900 on the box.
It was at a gas station. It's a scam. You know it, I know it. If you tried to sell your $300,000 home for 5 million at the local Petro Canada then yes its a scam. I wouldn't fall for someone palming off a "6900" dollar TV for 800 bucks and neither would you but obviously some people do. A scam is a scam. Yes it was his fault for falling for it and hopefully he has learned his lesson.
