Its not that I'm American, its that I'm poor. That's why I said "I sadly don't travel overseas." I'd love to say I visit GSM-only areas frequently, but its not reality. I listen to Leo Laporte talk about how he needs a GSM phone for travel, and I wish I had that kind of money. As it is, being able to use my phone on a theoretical future trip to Europe doesn't qualify for my phone must-have list.
But, as people have been pointing out, in 2 years everyone will be on LTE and we'll all get along!
