I have never had an issue with an online booking, both in North America or elsewhere. They always have my name at the desk when I arrive, etc. I typically use Expedia.ca and Travelocity.ca as they are in Canadian dollars (or Venere.com for Europe sometimes).
A friend of mine uses priceline.com, which can get you some pretty good deals at the expense of actually choosing which hotel you like. Not my cup of tea - I like to know where I'm staying before I pay for it.

I just downloaded their app, but really am leery as to how legit it is.
I was messing around with it and bid $10 for a 4 star hotel and somehow it gave me a result or indication like it was possible, which really didnt instill any confidence in me.
