In older society that guy would have either been beaten down by other guys for assaulting that woman, or completely shunned by society for being such a out of control a$$hat that he has to beat down a woman like that.
There was domestic assault in those days, but a guy assaulting a woman in public like that was branded as a coward and a moron.
