EA Did this similar thing with Fifa 10 called Live Season. It cost's them 4 british ponds or 400 microsoft points to be able to do this (that is for one league)
I don't see myself caring enough about weekly updates, or even injuries (because why would we want say, Crosby to not be able to be used due to injury) to even consider using actual money for updates. And soccer and baseball have more following than hockey for them to even bother with weekly roster updates.
