With the number of un-encrypted networks around here, there has to be some establishments that would unknowingly provide the service. I have my choice of two networks within vicinity of my house and multiple choices if I enable wireless adapter at work. One of them apparently a health clinic, with personal records available. Scary isn't it? If you have a wireless router, encrypt the darn thing, it's not hard.
Always is a pretty strong word. WEP encryption is pretty pointless in most instances. 1, it is easily cracked, and 2, it only encrypts locally. So yeah, maybe it would prevent someone from sniffing your wireless traffic between the computers in your office, but if you are hooked up to the internet, you'll still need to secure your computers anyway.

If you are just using your router to connect to the internet, as most people do, the risk is much higher of someone watching your traffic beyond the router, than someone monitoring your traffic through the airwaves.
