Density is simply one component of smart growth. New subdivisions are still fundamentally designed and laid out in a menner which makes them not particularly walkable or transit supportive. Uses are segregated, commercial is still isolated and auto-oriented, road patterns create meandering and inefficient bus routes, roads are too wide, connectivity is poor, green spaces are large but often consist of not much more than a field etc...
