It is way too easy to rape the computer at will even on the hardest of settings because the computer is so incredibly easy to trick and very predictable.
Is it too much to ask that EA puts a real effort into their highest selling sports game they have?

That's incorrect. It's not their highest selling sports game. It's their highest rated sports game, but not highest selling.
Also, go around the video game world and look at AI - specifically, look at sports like basketball, soccer and football - the computer AI always eventually becomes exploitable. The fact that the NHL developers patch the game to better balance and try to fix exploits puts them WAAAY ahead of their peers in both sports games, and other genres.
