I remember a really bad one in the early nineties that, IIRC, was the most costly disaster in Canadian history until recently (form a $$ perspective). My folks' place needed new shingles, as did many other houses in Calgary.

It must've been in 1996. My parents were were out for dinner and my brother and I were watching Cutthroat Island on VHS (movie came out in 1995). It was one of our first times being home alone without a sitter, and the storm scared the S**T out of us.
Looking at this Government website (
http://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/res/em...l-sig-eng.aspx), it totaled nearly $400 million in damages for 2 hailstorms within a week.
1996 Estimated damage: $303 million + $87.8 million
for second hail storm map
