Because that is exactly what the majority of American Christians did, they opposed ending slavery until it was eventually no longer acceptable to hold that belief.

While it is true that most pro-slavery Americans were Christians, it's also true that Abolitionists were profoundly guided toward that viewpoint by their faith.
