Which app is it? A lot of those apps require some kind of client running on your computer to receive the sync data.

Also, you might want to check out the Nike+ system. All the current iPhones and iPod touches have it built-in. All you need is a $20 transmitter for your shoe (although it doesn't work for all workouts, since it only tracks steps and distance).

Edit: That Nike thing is really only for running. I've tested it on some of the stuff at the gym, and it's pretty useless on bikes or ellipticals, etc.
