I had the same experience as a couple posters here..

I'm normally a healthy youngish guy, but I broke my foot back in April. As a result, I wore a cast and couldn't drive. I normally bike or run to and from work, so the bus was my only option.

For the four weeks I wore that cast, not once did anyone offer their seat to me. I get on in Inglewood, so there are very rarely seats available. I survived of course, but it always struck me as a pretty disappointing state of affairs.

But after going through that, and even the pain I continued to experience after the cast was off, I would probably give someone the benefit of the doubt that something else could be wrong that makes their life just a little bit easier to sit on the bus/train. Things are not always as they seem.
