I found that the biggest mistake I would keep making early on was not paying enough attention to opponent relationships. It might not seem fair that they ask you to share your techs, but with a -1 hit if you refuse and a +1 hit if you oblige, it really is worthwhile. If some civilizations look strong early, do whatever it takes to stay on their good side until you can challenge them.
