Maradona's apology refers to comments prior to Argentina's game with South Korea in which he said: "We all know how the French are, and Platini is French, and he believes he is better than the rest."

But he was unwilling to apologise to Brazilian legend Pele who has recently recommenced his war of words with Maradona by suggesting financial reasons lay behind his acceptance of the Argentina coaching job.
