If you're playing on an easy level, just automate your workers. Don't worry about tile improvements. It's only when you get to mid difficulties that you need to worry about maximizing tile improvements.

ok so i finally decided to give the Civilization series a try for the first time by picking up IV. now i'm at the point where the Chieftain difficulty is way too easy, yet if i bump it up to Warlord or Noble i get my ass kicked. the AI seems to pump out way more military units than i can and i always get war declared on me by someone which stunts my civilization growth. what tricks are there to playing this game where it's a challenge, but not so hard that you have to micromanage every last detail?
Playing on Nobel, you need to have an army at all times. It's not an option.

Also you need to learn which cities need what buildings.

Your cities don't need all the buildings in the game. In fact, most cities probably don't need half the buildings.

Make specialized cities like science cities. You would build libraries, universities etc. and have science specialists in these cities.

Production cities with factories and the like to build military units and wonders.

Early in the game you need to build military units. I always used to overlook it because I wanted to build every building in my cities, but when i had to go to war, i would always lose.

Attack and attack often. Build an army early on, take over your neighbour. It's pretty easy early on, you just need 6 or 8 warriors, and hope that they don't have an archer. If they do, there's no point in attacking.

If you can take over a civ early, it will set you up in a better position later on in the game.

Browse some of the fan forums. Civ Fanatics is a good one. There are tutorials on there.
