Weight is fairly big for me. When I bought the 18-200, I took it backpacking through Japan (thanks cmyden!). I also don't have a car, not that I was really considering that.

Also as a DSLR noob I'm not really comfortable with the idea of exposing my sensor and then cleaning it, especially when travelling. I also wanted something versatile for my first lens as I didn't really know exactly what I wanted. I knew I wanted the 18mm but that was pretty much it. I knew I wanted to start with a travel/walkaround lens though so the 18-200 fit the bill.

Not trying to talk you out of the 70-300 or anything, just wanted to point out that the budget 18-105 + 70-300 is enough that if you wanted to you could go for the 18-200 instead.
