And I also agree with what one poster said about Fallout 3. It's good but I personally don't think it deserves all the hype it gets. I'm more of a 3rd person, party, swords/shields type RPG guy.
I've also put about 15 hours in on Final Fantasy 13 and I'm enjoying it. It is very linear and, so far, you don't explore much so if that doesn't bother you then you should try it.
There's a game on XBox Live called Vandal Hearts which is a tactical type RPG game. I thought it was pretty fun (the demo at least).

Ya VH 1 and 2 I forgot about them, they were great tactics games.. I beat those a few years back..
I think this new Dragon Quest looks pretty sweet, I was a big fan of Dragon Warrior (I believe it was the first RPG for NES, even before Link).
I am tempted to buy a DS though because that seems to be where the traditional, 3rd person sword/shield RPGs you describe take place.
However.. Wiis are incredibly cheap right now..
