They could also get injured and not get another contract ever again in their life. So rather than start all year and risk injury and not ever getting a long term deal. Although by signing the tenders they buy time to work out a long term deal.
I think a lot of these players failed to forsee just how tough owners were going to get in this next set of CBA negotiations. In Football that extra two years of restricted free agency really does take away two years where a player could have been paid. With 2011 having the uncertainty it does, a guy like Vincent Jackson could possibly be a 29 year old not having played for 2 years when he goes looking for his UFA deal. Whereas if he'd been UFA this season and there was aCBA going forward I think he would have been paid.
