I’ve read the text of the statement that was provided in the original post, and I don’t think that’s really what they are getting at.
I think, unless I’m grossly wrong about the deaf community, that they are saying that deafness is a natural, human, condition and that people who are deaf should be accorded equal status, rights, respect, dignity, etc.
I would argue that they are concerned that those who choose not to pursue implants, or that can’t afford them, become looked down upon, or even shunned as burdensome, because they didn’t get “fixed”. I imagine too, that with this technology becoming available, that you would have people feeling enormous pressure from friends and family, maybe even employers, and maybe not feeling free to make their own personal decision.
