That's never been the case for me down here either. I have to call my insurance company and report my new car so they can modify my policy. Depending on the type of car my rates do fluctuate slightly up or down. My insurance will cover my new car for a specified period (which I don't know off the top of my head) but I always notify them the next business day and get it taken care of. I've never purchased a car private party so the dealership has always handled the registration part for me.
