She was actually wrong. What she said is supportive of revisionist history of Israel, that there were no Jews there prior to Israeli independence. That is not true, and that is more than likely why she got the backlash she deserved.
Pretty dumb thing to say, and for a politician to stand by her is political suicide.
Even more dumb to think she is right.
