Default Painting Drum Set

I've grown pretty tired of the colour of my drum set, so I've been looking into changing the colour, by repainting them. I'm thinking that I get some spray paint and take all the hardware/heads/rims off and then paint it.

My question is, how should I go about this?

- Is there a specific type of paint that I should look for?
- Does the covering on my drum shells need to have a specific type of finish, or any sort of criteria it has to meet before I paint it?
- Should I sand the finish off of the shells before I paint them?

I really don't want to ruin the wood or the shells themselves by painting them, so any sort of help is much appreciated seeing as I don't have any experience with this sort of thing.

Thanks in advance.
