People don't shoulder check enough as it is, and if you can't hear the thing in your car, i'm willing to bet motorcycle accidents go up.

That's what most people with annoyingly loud pipes will say, but the fact of the matter is guys with bikes put loud pipes on becasue they like the way it sounds. I put louder pipes on my first bike. It's not rediculously loud, but I did it for the sound, not the safety.

Trust me, anyone that thinks it makes it that much safer, needs to try riding in front of my old bike, and then switch to riding behind it, and they'll figure out real fast that those pipes don't help at all when it comes to cars in front of you hearing you.
