I guess it depends on the group. When we play, we usually just have 12 players (one sub per side) and 2 goalies, and guys usually aren't happy if more than that shows up. But we also like to be playing almost the whole time, with maybe a couple little breaks on the sidelines.
It's the same thing with friday night shinny (on ice). When you're playing a non-league game with no refs or timekeepers, whether it's road hockey or ice hockey, I find most guys just don't want to come out if they're going to be watching from the sidelines for half the time. They just want to be out there playing.
