I am in the "Island life was real, Sideways was a happy purgatory" camp.
The island was essential for all life, and in the AR it was destroyed. Mathew Fox's interpretation on JKL said as much. I also don't think the AR was constructed by the Losties, or Hurley. It is just a phase for everyone passing from life to whatever comes after. The church is what was a construct made by the Losties. Kate explained to Jack why they were going there.
I imagine Ben wasn't ready to let go until he had comes to terms with Alex. Desmond said that Ana Lucia wasn't ready yet.
I was really pissed when Jack's eyes closed last night, but I am loving this ending more and more. Yes there are a lot of questions about the mechanics that will never be answered, but also knew that Lost was never the type of show that was going to gift wrap an all emcompassing explanation. For example: I really wanted to know how MIB became trapped in the cabin, and how he started to fool everyone (Ben, The Others) that he was actually Jacob.
Fantastic show.
